Can I save money with an electric car?

Electric vehicles are increasing in popularity but with the price of energy high, is it still cheaper to run an electric car than it is a petrol or diesel one? Here we weigh up the cost of going green.

By 2030, the sale of new petrol and diesel cars is to be banned in the UK. Despite EVs making up more than half of all new cars sold, concerns remain around cost, range and whether the infrastructure is ready to achieve this target.

From April 2025 EVs will no longer be free from paying road tax. The removal of government grants, a higher list price than petrol and diesel, and the rising cost of refueling has left many wondering if making the switch to electric is financially worth it?

Shell planning roll-out of rapid EV chargers

Oil and gas major Shell plans to install 5,000 rapid electric vehicle chargers in Britain by 2025 in a bid confirm a market-leading position in the transition to clean energy.

The Anglo-Dutch company is also proposing an investment in on-street public charging points, building on its relationship with Ubitricity which it acquired in February.

The plans form part of Shell’s low-carbon strategy unveiled in February which will see more than 30,000 Shell Recharge charge points by 2025. It is working with a network of 17 partners.

Shell currently has 100 “rapid” 50-kilowatt and “ultra-rapid” 150KW chargers on its forecourts in Britain.

Shell Recharge locations are supplied by 100% certified renewable energy sources, that have been generated using wind, solar and biomass.

Meanwhile, Reuters reports that EU policy plans for plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), which contain an electric battery and a combustion engine, could mean the “transition” technology has a shorter lifespan than envisaged by some leading automakers.

Draft green finance regulations would ban manufacturers from labelling them as “sustainable investments” beyond 2025, potentially deterring investors. Meanwhile planned rules on emissions of pollutants like nitrogen oxides could increase the cost of producing these cars.

The aim of such reforms is to speed the transit to fully-electric vehicles and meet climate goals.

Shell claims UK first with 150kW EV charging forecourt install

Shell has claimed a UK first by installing a 150kW ultra-rapid electric vehicle charger on a petrol station forecourt in London.

The charger, which forms part of the energy giant’s Shell Recharge service, is now available for public use at Shell’s Battersea Service Station in Battersea, south London.

The 150kW charger, provided by European EV charging supplier Allego, has been installed alongside the station’s existing 50kW rapid chargers, bolstering the station’s options for EV drivers.

Allego will continue to manage the operation of both the 50kW and 150kW chargers which make up Shell Recharge, and Allego’s chief executive Anja van Niersen said the firm highly valued Shell’s initiative of integrating high-powered charging services at its portfolio of forecourts.

“We know that electric vehicle drivers want the right charging solution at the right place, to be always available and combined with excellent services. Shell Recharge shows how these wishes can be met,” she said.
