InstaVolt submits plan for ‘largest’ ultra-rapid charging hub in Brentford, London

UK public charging network InstaVolt has announced plans for London’s largest ultra rapid charging hub in Brentford.

The site, at Syon Park, is close to the A4 and M4, will provide rapid charging for people travelling into and out of the West of London.

InstaVolt is aiming to install 10,000 rapid chargers by 2030. InstaVolt operates an open charge model allowing any EV driver to use their charging points.

The company says their new hub will be the largest ultra-rapid charging hub within the M25. The site will feature 14 160kW BYD chargers, according to the planning application on the London Borough of Hounslow website.

Adrian Keen, chief executive of InstaVolt says: “The location of Syon Park is pivotal to engaging those who live on the commuter belt and providing them with an option to charge at a site where they themselves can switch off and recharge.”

“Being able to launch a large hub with reliable charging and access to amenities Syon Park offers, is key to encouraging a change of sentiment when it comes to charging in the UK. We want EV drivers to see charging as an opportunity to rest, take in nature, or stop for a bite to eat,” Keen said.

Earlier in July, InstaVolt announced plans to build what it says will be the UK’s largest electric vehicle (EV) charging ‘Super Hub’ near Winchester.

InstaVolt announces ‘extensive upgrade programme’ to its charging network

InstaVolt has confirmed that over 200 of its existing ChargePoint CPE250 electric vehicle (EV) chargers will benefit from an “extensive upgrade programme”.

Over the next six weeks, the 50kW chargers will be upgraded to become capable of outputting up to 125kW, significantly reducing charging times for EV drivers.

The newly optimised chargers will form part of InstaVolt’s established network of high-speed chargers, capable of delivering charging speeds of more than 100kW.

EV digital platforms such as Zap-Map, as well as InstaVolt’s charger map and app will display each newly upgraded chargepoint in real time.

“With this round of upgrades, drivers will experience faster rates of charging on our popular CPE250 chargers, subject to their car being able to accept greater than 50kW. This will reduce charging times and allow drivers to get back on the road sooner,” said Adrian Keen, CEO at InstaVolt.

“The majority of EVs on the road will benefit from this upgrade. With most of our CPE250s located next to convenience retail, and roadside food and drinks outlets including operators such as Costa Coffee and McDonald’s, this is another example of InstaVolt perfectly matching charging speeds to dwell time and providing an even better experience for its drivers.”

InstaVolt opens its first ultra-rapid EV charging hub in Wales

InstaVolt has opened its latest ultra-rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging hub at the Rhug Estate, in Wales.

The site, which sits on the A5, includes eight ultra-rapid 120kW InstaVolt chargers, boosting EV facilities in an underserved part of Britain. According to a report from the Department for Transport in April 2022, Denbighshire has an exceptionally low ratio of EV charging devices to its population.

“As electric vehicle usage continues to rise, there is a significant desire for rapid charging points across Wales, to address the regional disparities that exist within the EV charging network,” said Adrian Keen, CEO of InstaVolt.

“Our work with the Rhug Estate fills an urgent geographical need for rapid EV charging, and we’re pleased to expand our footprint in the region with our first InstaVolt hub in Wales.”

The site has been opened ahead of the summer holiday period, with the companies anticipating increased demand due to staycations. It sits three miles west of Corwen, where traffic from Manchester and Chester meets the main A5, making it a strategic location for those visiting West Wales.

InstaVolt launches ‘one of the UK’s largest’ EV charging hubs with Banbury expansion

InstaVolt has said its electric vehicle (EV) charging hub in Banbury, Oxfordshire is now one of the UK’s largest following the installation of eight new 150kW chargers.

The Alpitronic chargers have been installed alongside an existing eight 125kW chargers at the site, with work on the new chargers beginning in January 2022.

InstaVolt said this is in response to increased demand for rapid, easy to use chargepoints across the country, with the company aiming to grow its network to 10,000 rapid chargers by 2032. By this summer, it is hoping to have 1,000 rapid chargers on its network.

The company said that in the 12 months to March 2022, it has grown its network by 45%, with deals for EV charging rollouts with companies such as Costa CoffeeMcDonald’s, Bannatyne Health Clubs and Booths Supermarkets forming part of its “active efforts” to improve EV charging infrastructure.

Alongside the new chargers, the overall services at the hub have also been upgraded, with additional lighting, wider access spaces and two longer spaces to accommodate the increasing number of electric vans and fleet vehicles.

There are also plans for seating on site and a small wildflower meadow to increase biodiversity and create a habitat for pollinating insects.

Of the remaining 300 needed to reach their milestone, InstaVolt said they had 200 already in construction with new sites in development in partnership with McDonald’sKFCCosta Coffee and EH Booths.

“Improving public charging infrastructure across the whole of the UK is vital for people to feel confident enough to make the switch to electric vehicles. I’m proud to be spearheading the delivery of more rapid chargers to all four corners of the UK”, Adrian Keen, chief executive officer of InstaVolt, said.

Keen added that the company grew its network by over 50% over the past year, and it will keep on increasing the installation of chargers as sales of electric vehicles continue to reach record highs.

Another way for InstaVolt to increase their rapid chargers will be through Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, which they aim to install their first rapid chargers later this year.

“Not only does the UK need more chargers, but those chargers need to be reliable, in great locations and easy to use. The InstaVolt network delivers these requirements to drivers, as well as corporate fleets making the transition to electric,” added Keen.

The installation of new chargers will not only be done in new sites the company said, as they will soon start their first expansion project at their hub on the M40 in Banbury, with the addition of eight chargers.

InstaVolt launches app to help ‘fight range anxiety’

Rapid charging company InstaVolt has launched a new app to help combat range anxiety.

The app is designed to offer additional functionality to electric vehicle (EV) drivers, including a live map of InstaVolt’s charging network, a loyalty scheme that allows drivers to earn credits when they charge and the ability to track charging history.

The launch follows recent concern around the uptake of EVs, and the widening rollout of charge points across Britain. A report from the Public Accounts Committee earlier this month for example said the government has a “mountain to climb” to reach its goal of phasing out new petrol and diesel cars by 2030 and for all new cars to be zero-emission by 2035.

Pointing to the criticism, Adrian Keen, chief executive officer of InstaVolt, said while it appreciates the concerns raised, “we would argue a huge amount is being done to improve charging access in the UK and fight range anxiety amongst drivers by networks such as InstaVolt”.

“Our newly designed app – which is entirely optional – will help motorists quickly locate rapid charge points, wherever their location, and our loyalty scheme will incentivise and reward our regular customers.”

The app will additionally be used to promote InstaVolt’s partnerships and offer deals. Its launch follows a flurry of recent partnerships signed by the company, including with Costa Coffee to install rapid-chargers at 200 drive-thru sites and car subscription service Onto, as well has having ongoing partnerships with the likes of KFC and McDonalds.

InstaVolt now has over 600 chargers on its network nationwide, and in March celebrated a record breaking month of installations with 62 rapid chargers set live.

Current± recently caught up with Keen to discuss the company’s work rolling out public rapid charger motorway hubs and its increasing number of partnerships.

InstaVolt scoops up contract to rollout 200 chargers for Costa Coffee

InstaVolt has completed a food and drink chain hattrick as it announces a new partnership with Costa Coffee.

Over 200 rapid electric vehicle (EV) chargers are to be installed at Costa Coffee Drive-Thru locations across the UK, offering charging speeds of up to 120kW.

InstaVolt’s ‘open charger’ model enables any driver to use its charging points on a pay-as-you-go basis, upping visibility and ease of charging.

It builds on the existing 176 chargepoints already in operation across selected Costa Coffee locations in the UK, and follows InstaVolt signing partnerships with fast food giants KFC and McDonalds.

InstaVolt’s chief executive officer, Adrian Keen, made reference to what he described as “one of the biggest barriers” to EV uptake, with this being the perception that there is a lack of public chargers.

“EV charging needs to ‘slip in’ to customers everyday lives, and by partnering with Costa Coffee, we’re able to take additional steps towards combatting range anxiety in the UK,” he added.

The new partnership comes in a busy period for the EV charging firm, having achieved a record month in March for installations, coming in at 62 rapid chargers set live.

In the same month, InstaVolt laid claim to the UK’s largest public rapid charger motorway hub, with the eight-bay hub located at Welcome Break’s service area on the northbound carriageway of the M6 at Corley in the Midlands.

Current± caught up with Keen to discuss the hub as well as how the partnerships with big name brands are “fundamental to our business case”.

Last month, InstaVolt also become the latest charging network to be available to drivers through EV subscription service Onto, with access to all 2,000 chargers on Onto enabled through an RFID card.

Instavolt lauds opening of UK’s largest public rapid charger motorway hub

Instavolt has laid claim to the UK’s largest public rapid charger motorway hub as it opens a new electric vehicle (EV) charging site.

The eight-bay hub is located at Welcome Break’s service area on the northbound carriageway of the M6 at Corley in the Midlands. A further seven rapid chargers are to open on Welcome Break’s southbound carriageway at Corley by the end of the month.

The chargers form part of a £50 million investment by Instavolt to help meet its goal of installing 5,000 rapid EV chargers by 2025. It currently has 570 rapid chargers installed.

The EV charging firm has signed agreements for chargers with a number of companies, including fast food chains KFC and McDonalds. The KFC partnership covers the installation of rapid chargers at up to 450 KFC drive thru restaurants in the UK, while the McDonalds partnership – announced in July 2020 – is for the installation of 125kW chargers at new and existing drive thru restaurants “where they can be accommodated” across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Instavolt’s chief executive officer, Adrian Keen, said the project at Welcome Break’s service areas marks “a significant step forward for EV drivers” as it allows them to take advantage of Instavolt’s contactless payment and “class leading reliability” on a motorway for the first time.

He added that the M6 has particular importance for the company due to it being “one of the busiest and longest continuous motorways in the UK”.

Electric Car CHARGING rolling out at McDonald’s in the UK – and it’s 125kW Rapid Charging

McDonald’s partners with InstaVolt to roll out rapid charging for electric cars at its UK restaurants, offering proper 125kW Rapid charging.

The rise and rise of electric cars seems pretty much unstoppable for now, but as the take-up of electric cars starts to shift from ambitious early adopters to the mainstream, there are still a number of obstacles to overcome.

Instavolt rapid charger at McDonalds (Image: Instavolt)
Instavolt rapid charger at McDonalds (Image: Instavolt)

Price is still a big barrier for EVs, but there is light on the near horizon for that with predictions battery costs will soon mean EVs can be sold at prices comparable to ICE cars, and the electric car charging network is still an issue.

Yes, there are lots of little 7kW chargers floating around everywhere from on-street to supermarket car parks, but as batteries get bigger – and lower costs will see them getting better still – an hour-long charge at Tescos on a 7kW charge won’t do much more than get you home again.

But now McDonald’s has teamed up with InstaVolt to install proper Rapid Chargers at their UK Drive Thru restaurants, offering up to 125kW charge rates, enough to deliver an 80 per cent charge in most EVs in the time it takes you to wolf down a big Mac and Fries.

Paul Pomroy, McDonald’s UK CEO, said:

With over 1,300 restaurants our ambition would mean you would never be far from a charging point. As we look toward a return to normal service post-COVID19, drivers will be able to pop in for a coffee or a meal and get an 80% charge in 20 minutes. We are known for speed and convenience, and this partnership with InstaVolt will provide just that for EV driver.
