How long does it take to charge an electric car?

The time taken to charge an electric car can vary from as little as 20 minutes to as much as 24 hours. Here’s why…

With almost one-in-five new cars being fully electric, more drivers will be learning about charging electric cars for the first time. And alongside how much charging an electric car cost and how to use a charging point, they’ll likely be considering the time it takes to charge.

The two biggest factors in how long it’ll take to charge your electric car are the size of the battery, and the speed at which your car can charge. For example, an electric car with a small battery and a fast charging speed will charge a lot faster than one with a large battery and a slow charging speed. We’ll go into both of those factors in more depth in this story, as well as looking at the different types of electric car chargers and answering your electric car charger questions.

Types of electric car chargers

The speed at which you can charge your electric car can be governed by the type of charger you’re using. Charging at home using a three-pin plug is the slowest method, typically taking around 24hrs to replenish the battery on your car. Doing so is therefore impractical for many electric car owners, although it can be doable if you own a plug-in hybrid car.

Osprey Charging opens ‘South West’s largest EV charging hub’

Osprey Charging has opened the “South West’s largest [electric vehicle] EV charging hub” consisting of 16 ultra-rapid chargepoints.

The EV charging hub is located on the A38 Devon Expressway at Salmon’s Leap in Buckfastleigh and designed to support EVs of all types.

Each charger is capable of providing 300kW charging for vehicles able to accept this high power without wasting power on lower-capability cars, Osprey said. This allows customers of the hub to add 100 miles of range in 15 to 25 minutes.

Osprey also stated that it will provide local residents, businesses and visitors with reliable EV infrastructure, help improve air quality, reduce noise pollution and support local decarbonisation efforts.

“I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve created at Salmon’s Leap. We purchased the land so have been able to precisely design the space and install hardware that maximises availability and ease of use of chargers for all types of vehicles and drivers,” said Ian Johnston, CEO of Osprey Charging.

“Our largest site yet, it is a significant milestone for the Osprey team as we work tirelessly to ensure that our nationwide infrastructure deployment of rapid EV charging stations continues at an unprecedented pace.”

Osprey was amongst a number of founding members of the new trade association ChargeUK. Revealed in April 2023, the association is aiming to invest £6 billion by 2030 in EV charging and double the size of the UK EV charging network in 2023.

Electric dream? What it’s really like to drive 285 miles to The Lakes in a leccy car

With its rugged landscape, winding country lanes and laidback lifestyle, you wouldn’t necessarily put The Lake District down as being an electrifying hotspot.

However, the folks at BMW have teamed up with 15 UK National Parks  – including The Lakes – as part of a three-year initiative called Recharge in Nature, which aims to install electric vehicle (EV) charging points at some of our best-loved beauty spots.

It’s a wise move. With sustainable tourism and off-grid adventures being big business these days, eco-friendly destinations are becoming a must-have on our in our holiday tick list. (Not to mention the boom in staycations due to the pandemic and cost of living crisis.)

Being England’s largest and most visited National Park, The Lakes are the first to be kitted out with charging points in three locations, Windermere and Ambleside, Hawkshead and Coniston.

But just how well will this eco-conscious initiative work in reality?

To find out I was loaned the newly launched fully-electric BMW iX1 and told to head to the Langdale Hotel just outside Ambleside – a mere 285 miles away from my Essex home.

Advised that the car had a range of between 259 and 270 miles on a single charge, and able to recharge up to 80% of the range in less than half an hour, it looked like we’d need just one pit stop along the way, so we were more than excited to jump in our fancy new wheels and head towards the M6.

Engie expands GeniePoint network with new rapid installs

Engie is expanding its GeniePoint network with the installation of thirteen new rapid chargers in the west midlands.

The installations of the 50kW+ chargers are part of a new partnership with Bromsgrove District Council, with BMM Energy Solutions set to carry out the physical installations. Engie will provide ongoing operational, customer service and maintenance services for the next decade.

The first installation is due to start in summer 2020, with all chargers to be installed by the end of the year hopefully.

All of the new GeniePoint chargers will be supplied with 100% renewable energy and will be pay as you go, offering contactless or debit card payments.

Bromsgrove District Council won funding for EV charging as part of the government’s Ultra Low Emission Taxi Infrastructure Scheme, with the new chargers to be free to use for registered Taxi and Private Hire vehicles for the first year. After this initial period, there will be a 75% discount for 2-5 years and a 50% discount after.

Councillor Margaret Sherrey said it was “fantastic news” for the district.

“Now we can get the ball rolling to develop and implement clean transport options for our residents as well as giving EV users from elsewhere in the UK the opportunity to stop or visit Bromsgrove to ‘recharge their batteries’”.

GeniePoint Network Joins North Devon to Major Routes

Rapid EV Charging for Torridge District Council

ChargePoint Services has been working alongside Torridge District Council to link them with the national GeniePoint Network. Four GeniePoint rapid chargers have been installed at strategic locations across the area, ensuring drivers living and working in Torridge, visiting the area or just passing through, have easy access to reliable, rapid electric vehicle charging facilities.

The GeniePoint Network chargers provide the latest in EV charging technology with access via the GeniePoint Network mobile web app (www.geniepoint.co.uk) or RFID card, for easy usability, payment and operation.

Torridge District Council are aiming to be carbon neutral by 2030, and encouraging residents to purchase electric vehicles is a part of enabling them to achieve this goal. The provision of easy to use, reliable charging facilities is designed to motivate the take-up of EVs in the area, both for residents and local businesses, demonstrating EVs are a cost effective, convenient and beneficial asset to their community, their business and to themselves reducing pollution and improving air quality.

Alex Bamberg, Managing Director, ChargePoint Services team, said:

“We recognise that managing the transition to electric powered transport requires investment and cooperation across multiple industries. The recent acquisition of ChargePoint Services by ENGIE gives us the strength and capability to meet the needs of the explosive EV infrastructure requirements across the UK, and we are working hard with our chosen partners to provide this facility nationally and become the number one provider of electric vehicle charging across the UK.”

Councillor Bob Hicks, Leader Member for the Economy, said:

“The Council have chosen to install this technology as we recognise and understand the importance of creating an infrastructure capable of supporting the rise in popularity in electric vehicles. The arrangements we have in place will allow us the flexibility to adapt our approach as the technology advances. The publicly accessible and popular locations mean that both visitors and residents will have a convenient option to recharge their vehicles while visiting local shops and leisure facilities at the same time. It is no secret that finances are tight in Local Government at present and partnering with ChargePoint Services helped provide a cost neutral implementation option. Being able to deploy the latest technology allowing two cars to be charged at once to 80% full in 30 minutes was also attractive.”

Drivers are offered free parking whilst using the chargers, and following the installation Torridge DC have received a plethora of positive comments from the public. The GeniePoint Network chargers have provided a physical presence to help promote the use of sustainable vehicles, and as more residents see that electric vehicles aren’t as inconvenient as they first believed, they foresee ownership of electric vehicles undoubtedly continuing to rise in the Torridge area.
