‘First of its kind’ rapid EV charging point launches in London

Transport for London (TfL) and electric vehicle (EV) charging network Engenie have opened London’s first rapid charging hub in Stratford, London.

The hub will have six 50kW charging points, which are capable of providing up to 100 miles of charge in 35 minutes.

This EV hub is the first of five which will open in London over the next few years as part of the Mayor of London’s EV infrastructure delivery plan.

TfL has contributed funding towards the project, but Engenie will continue subsidising the site to ensure that there will be no parking fees for those using the chargers.

Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, said:

‘London’s air quality is a serious public health crisis and we face a climate emergency which threatens our future.

‘We need to help people to move away from petrol and diesel cars so that we can clean up our air and tackle climate change.

‘I want to help people to switch to public transport, walking and cycling and I want all new cars and vans in London to be zero emissions by 2030, not 2040 as the government is proposing.

‘This announcement will help us to continue to work together with London boroughs and the private sector to deliver a major expansion in charging infrastructure and an electric vehicle revolution in the capital.’

Engenie maps out plans to double UK rapid chargers by 2024

Engenie is set to double the number of rapid chargers in the UK, installing over 2,000 by 2024.

The move comes after a £35 million investment commitment from European infrastructure fund Cube Infrastructure Fund II.

In May, data from Zap-Map revealed there were 2,189 rapid chargers across the country. This figure has since increased to 2,296 at 1,573 locations. Engenie’s plans for the installation of over 2,000 chargers will effectively double the number of rapid chargers in the UK.

The rapid charging points are to be installed at accessible public sites, including supermarkets and retail parks. By the end of this year, 100 sites are to have rapid chargers installed.

Engenie’s charge points don’t require a membership of connection fee, operating a contactless payment method. The 50kW chargers are compatible with all EVs currently on the market.

Octopus and Engenie team up to accelerate EV fast charge roll-out

Engenie is partnering with Octopus Energy to source renewable power in support of its plans to install 400 rapid charge points at 200 Marston restaurants by December 2020

Octopus Energy has announced it is partnering with electric vehicle (EV) charge point distributor Engenie to supply 100 per cent renewable electricity to its growing rapid charge network, which it expects to roll out to 200 Marston’s restaurants by December 2020.

Engenie currently operates 16 rapid charge points at eight Marston pubs. Octopus Energy will fuel the planned expansion of the network, as Engenie works to install 400 rapid chargers at 200 pubs by the end of 2020.

“Reliable rapid charging with 100 per cent green energy is critical for mass adoption of electric cars – supporting people without driveways, and those on longer journeys,” said Fiona Howarth, CEO at Octopus Electric Vehicles.

“Octopus is delighted to partner with Engenie, to supply and promote its efficient network at Marston’s restaurants and other great destinations across the country, helping clear up local air pollution and enabling us to move to a zero-carbon transportation.”

The firms are marking the partnership’s launch today with a ‘Discovery Day’ at Marston’s Bakehouse pub in Welwyn Garden City, showcasing Engenie’s newly installed rapid charge points. Visitors can also book a slot to test drive an EV.

The rapid chargers in the Engenie network can charge an EV with 75-100 miles in around 30 minutes, depending on the car and the way it is driven.
